Kate was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the sixties, but lived the first two years of her life in South Africa. Returning to the UK she grew up in Northumberland, leaving to live first in Manchester, then The Peak District. She has family connections to The Fens and Australia.

Kate’s research is based in the exploration of English Paper Piecing (EPP) and the landscape of the East Midlands. She practices walking as research to a location near her home, and continues with investigations into the never-ending potentialities of EPP.

Her engagement is with cycles of growth/loss/renewal, and she believes that it is only through making that material knowledge is kept alive. To study these cycles she makes 3D objects which can be placed alongside elements of the landscape. To be there for the moment of the taking of a photograph, then taken home to be left to decay, be destroyed, or be re-made.

She started her MA Fine Art in October 2024, and is due to complete it in August 2026
