MY PORTFOLIO

Figurehead

The concept for this project was to capture Artefactual Communication; that is what an artefact can tell us about itself, how it was made, why it was made, and who made it. To this end, data was collected simultaneously as the artefact was made, with the aim of capturing the models of making in my mind. At the start of the project these were operating unconsciously after many years of making in my medium, English Paper Piecing (EPP). After the making processes, data was collected about the agency of the artefact by taking it out of the studio and into the world.

(His) Lady

In this project, instead of data collection being the prime object of the methodology, I used a floating verses methodology to observe and investigate the placement of fabric tesserae, firstly against tesserae of the same fabric, and secondly against different fabrics. I chose the folk song The Raggle-Taggle Gypsies in three versions for its featuring the theme of where you choose to make your bed, as the artefact made would follow the form of a bedcover. The patchwork coverlet is a cultural object which embodies traditional values of mending, repair, repurpose and reuse, and self-sufficiency
